Bill Smith

Bill Smith is a graduate of Cardiff University (1972), where he also gained a doctorate in molecular orbital theory (1976). Since 1980 he has been associated with CCP5 - the collaborative computational project concerned with the simulation of condensed phases. He is author or co-author of many of the simulation programs of the CCP5 Program Library, particularly DL_POLY, which has been a flagship code for CCP5 for many years.

Down the years his interests in simulation have included:

  1. Parallel molecular dynamics algorithms;
  2. Biological systems: DNA, valinomycin, superoxide dismutases;
  3. Silicate glasses;
  4. Path integral methods;
  5. Fast ion conductors;
  6. Surfactants;
  7. Polymers;
  8. Contact forces in powders.
He has been a participant in the Summer School since 1998.
